Inisght:

Black males are twice as likely to drop out of high school as white males, and only 12 percent of them are proficient in reading by the fourth grade, compared with 38 percent of white males. They are twice as likely as whites to be held back in elementary school, and three times as likely to be suspended from school. That trend follows black men right into adulthood: They are more than half as likely as white male students to graduate college in four years. In fact, 32% of African American males born in 2001 can expect to spend some time in the criminal justice system.

Black women on the other hand enroll in college at the same rate as white males and graduate at twice the rate of black men. Black women earn almost 2 out of 3 of all graduate degrees earned by African-Americans and their unemployment rate is nearly 20% less than that of black men. Apparently, the same issues affecting black males have not victimized the educational and economic fortunes of black women.

The achievement gap between black males and black females is rarely discussed; however, it is the most corrosive contributor to the decline of the black family as well as negatively impacts our nation’s economy. What can be done?

On Thursday evening, March 3, 2011, these distinguished educators and media professionals engage in a discussion about what can be done to solve the most important social and economic issue facing Black America.

ZETA PSI CELEBRATES 85 YEARS WITH WINTER FORMAL AT COLUMBIA | JANUARY 16, 2010

Zeta Psi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., honored Bro. Felton “Buddy” Johnson, president of Education Access, Inc.; Bro. Marlo Young, partner of the law firm Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP; and Jocelynne Rainey, human resources director for J. A.V. Food Corporation and wife of Bro. Perry C. Rainey at the chapter’s 85th Anniversary Winter Formal held at the Columbia University Faculty House. The elegant affair featured a cocktail hour, formal dinner, live band and DJ. Proceeds from this event help to fund the chapter’s annual Zeta Psi Scholarship Award for high school students as well as their Black Male Health Awareness Program.

Zeta Psi Chapter was established on December 24, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY. After eight and a half decades of service in the New York City area, Zeta Psi Chapter remains a force in the African-American community. In addition to their successful scholarship and health awareness programs, the chapter sponsors the highly popular Omega After Dark Mixer Series designed to bring together NYC area urban professionals for networking and intellectual conversation. Included in the series is the chapter’s annual White Party in Sag Harbor, NY. Zeta Psi Chapter is the first Black Greek letter organization to host an annual event in the Hamptons.

In the true spirit of Zeta Psi Chapter, known for both working hard and playing hard, chairman of the event, Bro. Brian K. Monroe set the tone for the evening at the dais when he told the guests, “Don’t let the tuxedos fool you. We’re going to party tonight.” And party they did. Congratulations Zeta Psi Chapter on 85 years of excellence.
